...the key to life.

Has it really been this long since I put anything up on the blog.  Boy, time does sure fly by rather quickly.  I guess I'll start off the new year with a quick little DIY project that I've been mulling over since before Christmas. I happened upon an online tutorial showcasing how to assemble a nice Leather Utility Style Keychain that can be hooked onto a belt loop on a pair of blue jeans or pants.

Something a lot like this Apolis Transit Issue Keychain:

It's a great piece of kit no doubt, but at $38 it's a little bit on the steep side for what it is.  So I set about appropriating the necessary supplies from my favorite vendors.  Leather, Waxed Thread and Needle from my local Michael's Craft Store.  HK Style Clips and Split Rings from Amazon.  The ideas I borrowed from Apolis and E3 Supply company (note the watch and keychain to the right of the picture below).

As I progressed with the process (measuring my desired width for each leather strap...I settled on 1/2 inch), I realized that the small size of the strap would make it difficult to accomplish the stitch work that I had intended (a la the Apolis Keychain).

Necessity being the mother of invention, I decided to copy the design of the existing E3 Supply Company Keychain that I already possessed and wrapped the waxed thread into two layers around the leather strap.

I had already given up on the idea of sewing the strap shut at each corner and glued each layer shut with Gorilla Crazy Glue.  The wrapped thread was sealed at each end with some additional Gorilla Crazy Glue with care given to not over-saturate the leather.   I did not document each single step in the process via picture, but I think the end result came out better than I expected....especially for a "prototype".

I'll continue to refine the design and experiment with different materials as I have a few more to make that I intend to give out as gifts.

I hope you all come back to visit  as I get back in the saddle and update this blog on a regular basis.  Feel free to let me know what you think about this keychain ;-)
